Families travelling with children under the age of 16, from March 1st 2016 no longer have to pay APD (Air Passenger Duty) on the child fares. If you have already booked for travel after this date, you may also be legible for a refund.


What is Air Passenger Duty?

Air Passenger Duty (APD) is an excise duty which is charged on the carriage of passengers flying from a United Kingdom or Isle of Man airport on an aircraft that has an authorised take-off weight of more than ten tonnes or more than twenty seats for passengers.


Is APD paid on all flights and holidays?

Yes, any flight leaving the UK is subject to APD, however, APD refunds are only available to those booked in an economy and for children under the age of 16 by the time of their return travel.

How much is the Air Passenger Duty?

The APD cut will be extended to under-16s from 1 March 2016. The APD on economy flights currently costs between £13-£97 depending on the distance of the flight. This will change to between £13 and £71, depending on the distance of the flight, from April 2015.


How do I get my APD refund?

Some airlines have already started processing refunds automatically; others require you to contact customer services or fill out an online form.


How much are taxes on airline tickets?

I checked a mid-March flight from San Francisco to London on British Airways, for example, and found a total round-trip ticket price of $467. According to BA, the basic fare was $248 plus $219 in fees and taxes, for a total of $467.
